Background of the Study

Pediatric nursing is a specialized field focusing on the healthcare needs of infants, children, and adolescents. The demand for pediatric nurses has grown due to increasing child health challenges, yet nursing students often overlook this specialty (Johnson et al., 2024). Several factors, including clinical experiences, mentorship, and personal interests, shape students’ perceptions of career prospects in pediatric nursing (Brown & Smith, 2023).

At Bauchi State College of Nursing and Midwifery, pediatric nursing is a core part of the curriculum. However, there is limited research on students’ perceptions of pediatric nursing as a career path. This study aims to evaluate students' attitudes toward pediatric nursing and the factors influencing their career choices.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the importance of pediatric nursing, many students do not consider it a viable career due to perceived challenges such as high emotional demands and workload intensity (Taylor et al., 2024). Understanding students’ perceptions is crucial for addressing misconceptions and improving pediatric nursing education.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine nursing students’ perception of career prospects in pediatric nursing.
  2. To identify factors influencing students’ interest in pediatric nursing.
  3. To explore strategies for increasing interest in pediatric nursing careers.

Research Hypotheses

  1. Nursing students have a positive perception of pediatric nursing as a career.
  2. Clinical experiences significantly influence students’ interest in pediatric nursing.
  3. Career counseling increases students’ willingness to specialize in pediatric nursing.

Definitions of Terms

  • Pediatric nursing: The specialized nursing care of infants, children, and adolescents.
  • Career perception: Students’ attitudes and beliefs about professional opportunities.
